"Sri Lanka budget" covers a lot of ground, because someone riding buses and sleeping in fan dorms spends very differently from someone hiring a car and driver for the whole trip. This guide covers the 2026 costs: the rupee and its exchange rates, what the daily budget covers, where to sleep, food, getting around, entry fees, a SIM card and the ETA fee. Every price carries a date or a source, and where sources disagree we say so rather than pick a number. At the end we compare independent travel with one of our group trips.

How much does a trip to Sri Lanka cost in 2026?

There's no single total, because the biggest costs depend on your route and how many people share a car. Start with the daily budget above and multiply it by your number of days. Then add what it leaves out: your international flight, travel insurance, the ETA fee if you have to pay it, and any big extras such as a private driver, a safari or a whale-watching trip. The sections below give the prices we could confirm, with dates.

The Sri Lankan rupee and exchange rates

The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). These are mid-market rates from xe.com on 5 October 2026 (16:00 UTC), shown as rupees per unit and rounded:

CurrencyLKR per unit (about)
US dollar (USD)330
British pound (GBP)437
Euro (EUR)370
Indian rupee (INR)3.4
Australian dollar (AUD)230
Canadian dollar (CAD)232
New Zealand dollar (NZD)185

We worked these out from xe.com's table of rates per US dollar. Banks, ATMs and money changers use their own buy and sell rates, and rates move daily, so check a live rate before you travel. We quote other prices in the currency the source used and don't convert them.

Cards and cash. Hotels, mid-range restaurants and shops in tourist areas take cards, but carry cash for tuk-tuks, local meals, entry fees and smaller guesthouses. ATMs are widespread in towns and cities and rarer in small villages. Banks add a flat fee per foreign-card withdrawal, which 2026 listings put at roughly LKR 300 to 1,000 depending on the bank (ATM Fee Saver, checked 6 October 2026), and your own bank may add a fee too. Where a machine or card terminal offers to convert to your home currency, decline it and let your card issuer set the rate. That "dynamic currency conversion" usually works out worse.

Tipping. It isn't compulsory, but it's expected in tourism. Travel guides we checked on 26 September 2026 suggest roughly LKR 1,000 to 2,000 a day for a private driver, more for a chauffeur guide who also narrates the sites, and LKR 1,000 to 3,000 for a safari driver or guide depending on the length of the drive. For restaurants without a service charge on the bill, they suggest about 10%, and rounding up a tuk-tuk fare is normal. These are customs, not rules.

What the daily budget covers

Sri Lanka doesn't have one daily cost: it depends on how much you use buses and trains and how much you hire a driver. US$35 to 55 a day is our planning range, built around dorm beds, mostly local transport and a share of entry fees. It isn't a surveyed average.

Included in US$35 to 55 a day:

  • A dorm bed or basic guesthouse room
  • Food and drink
  • Local transport: buses, trains and tuk-tuks
  • A share of entry fees to the main sites

Not included:

  • International flights and travel insurance
  • The ETA fee, if your passport isn't on the free list (US$50 online)
  • A private driver for most days
  • Safari jeeps, whale-watching boats and surf lessons
  • A SIM card or eSIM, souvenirs and gifts

A day with a private driver, a safari or several paid sites costs more than a day on buses and trains. The sections below give the main prices.

Where to stay: hostel costs

Listing-site averages for a dorm bed run from about US$7 to 10 a night (budgetyourtrip.com and Hostelworld listings, checked 26 September 2026). We don't publish a town-by-town table, because prices vary by season and by hostel. Our hostels in Sri Lanka guide covers each area.

Food and drink costs

We don't publish per-dish prices. There's no official source for them, and 2026 listings disagree with one another. Eating where locals eat usually costs less than the restaurants on tourist strips. Our Sri Lanka food guide covers what to order.

Getting around: transport costs

Trains. The hill-country railway is only partly open after Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025. As of 6 October 2026, trains run from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola (since 2 October) and from Nanu Oya to Badulla through Ella (since 20 June, four trips a day). Peradeniya to Kandy, Gampola to Nawalapitiya and Hatton to Nanu Oya are closed, with no confirmed reopening date. So you can't ride the classic Kandy to Ella route end to end: go from Kandy to Nanu Oya by road (3 to 4 hours), then take the train to Ella (about 2.5 hours). A reserved seat adds a reservation charge to the ordinary fare. On Nanu Oya to Ella, the railway's published table (last revised August 2022) lists Rs 2,000 in 1st class, Rs 1,200 in 2nd and Rs 900 in 3rd, plus a 5% fee when you book online. Reservations open 30 days before travel and can sell out within hours. Our Kandy to Ella train guide has the current status and booking steps.

Buses. Intercity buses are the budget option for long distances, though winding roads make journeys slower than the map suggests. The National Transport Commission announced a fare rise on 3 July 2026, effective from midnight on 6 July: the minimum fare became Rs 34, normal services on routes under 100 km rose 12%, and those on routes of 100 km or more rose 20% (Daily Mirror, 3 July 2026). The commission says its annual revisions follow a cost index that includes fuel, so older blog prices will be low.

Tuk-tuks and PickMe. Tuk-tuks are the usual way to get around town, and PickMe is Sri Lanka's own ride-hailing app. We couldn't find a dated 2026 per-kilometre fare, so we don't quote one. Agree a fare before you get in, or use the price the app shows.

Private drivers. For a multi-stop trip through the Cultural Triangle and hill country, many independent travellers hire a car or van with a driver, or an SLTDA-licensed chauffeur guide who both drives and narrates the sites. Operator listings checked on 26 September 2026 quote roughly US$70 to 120 a day for the vehicle and driver, fuel included, split among whoever shares the car. A chauffeur guide usually costs more than a driver alone. These are operator listings, so ask for a written quote.

Fuel quota. Sri Lanka has run a nationwide QR-code fuel quota since 15 March 2026. The FCDO says every vehicle gets a weekly quota in response to the situation in the Middle East, and that the government has made special arrangements for tour operators and hotels to limit disruption to tourism. Fuel prices were raised three times between 28 February and 21 March 2026 (Bernama, 22 March 2026). Confirm any driver's day rate with the operator before you book.

There is no combined Cultural Triangle ticket: each site sells its own. The Central Cultural Fund lists its fees in US dollars, payable in rupees. Our Sri Lanka safari guide has the fuller breakdown for the parks, including Yala's block closures.

SIM cards and eSIMs

Dialog and SLT-Mobitel both have counters in the arrivals hall at Bandaranaike Airport, open for incoming flights, and you need your passport to register a SIM. Tourist packs listed in 2026 run from about LKR 1,300 for 9 GB (Dialog) to about LKR 2,450 for 50 GB, and SLT-Mobitel lists 30 GB for LKR 1,540 (listings checked 6 October 2026). An eSIM set up before you fly skips the counter and works the moment you land.

Visa and entry costs in 2026

Every visitor needs an ETA (electronic travel authorisation), applied for online at the official site, eta.gov.lk, before you fly. Since 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India, get it free for a 30-day, double-entry stay. Everyone else pays US$50 online, or US$20 for SAARC nationals. There's no "US$60 on arrival" fee. Our Sri Lanka visa guide has the full rules by nationality.

Independent travel versus a group trip

Going independently, you pay for each part yourself: beds, a driver or buses, entry fees, safari and train seats. The total depends on your choices, and we don't state a figure for a whole trip. Our 12-Day Sri Lanka Tour covers a route through Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, an Udawalawe safari and three nights on the south coast, for one price, also excluding your international flight. The trip page has the current price.

The trip price covers 11 nights in hotels and guesthouses, a private van from Kandy to Nanu Oya, reserved train seats from Nanu Oya to Ella (or the van all the way if seats aren't available), a Trip Host with the group the whole way, a licensed local guide for the sightseeing and safari days, and the entry fees for Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, the Temple of the Tooth and Udawalawe National Park. You join a group of other solo travellers aged 18 to 40, instead of arranging a shared driver with strangers at your guesthouse.

If a week is all you have, our 7-day Sri Lanka Express covers Sigiriya and Dambulla, Kandy, Ella and the south coast. The trip page has the current price.

Independent travel means you handle the 30-day train booking window, every bus, driver and connection, and the fuel quota's effect on driver availability. On a group trip someone else does that work, and you get a host and a group.
