At around 1,868 metres, Nuwara Eliya sits noticeably higher and cooler than anywhere else on a typical Sri Lanka route, with colonial-era buildings, a golf course and a lake that wouldn't look out of place in the English countryside they were modelled on. It's also the centre of Sri Lanka's tea industry, surrounded by estates that supply some of the country's best-known Ceylon tea. This guide covers the tea factories, Horton Plains and World's End, Gregory Lake, the climate and how to get here.

- How long: one night for the town and a tea estate; two if you're adding Horton Plains
Tea estates near Nuwara Eliya
Several working tea estates around Nuwara Eliya offer a factory tour and a tasting, and the two most visited sit on opposite sides of town.
Pedro Tea Estate, about 3.5 km from the centre on the road to Kandapola, is the closer option. Its factory dates from the 1880s and still shows some vintage machinery. A short guided tour, around half an hour, takes you through the sorting, rolling and drying areas and ends with a cup of tea. The factory mostly works at night, so you're more likely to see the machinery standing idle than running. Published entry fees for the tour differ a lot from one listing to the next, so ask what it costs when you arrive.
Labookellie, about 16 km toward Kandy on the main road, is the bigger stop, and one most tour vans pull into on the drive up from Kandy regardless of which company runs the estate. It was long known as the Mackwoods Tea Centre; the estate and factory are now branded Damro, though older maps and guides still say Mackwoods. Listings describe the factory tour and tasting as free, and you can also walk through the tea garden around it.

Either estate works as a half-day filler, and Labookellie fits naturally if you're already travelling the Kandy road rather than making a special trip for it.
Horton Plains and World's End
Horton Plains National Park, about 32 km and roughly an hour to an hour and a half from Nuwara Eliya, is a highland plateau best known for World's End, a sheer escarpment that drops nearly 900 metres with views stretching to the south coast on a clear day. The catch is timing: cloud typically rolls in from around 9 to 10am, so the view is at its clearest for visitors who arrive at or soon after opening.

The park opens at 6am and closes at 6pm. Sources disagree on when ticket sales stop, so don't plan on a late arrival. Most people come for World's End, and a mid-morning arrival often means queuing for a view that's already clouded over.
Published entrance fees for foreign adults conflict. Some listings put the total at about US$30 to 35 with service charge and tax, while a 2025 schedule shows US$15 plus VAT, and we couldn't open the park's own ticket page on 6 October 2026. Check the price at the gate before you plan your budget. Vehicles pay a separate charge. Most visitors arrive by jeep, tuk-tuk or taxi from Nuwara Eliya rather than driving themselves.
The main loop, taking in World's End, the smaller Baker's Falls and back, covers around 9.5 km and takes most people 3 to 4 hours at a comfortable walking pace. Bring a warm layer: even in the middle of the day, the plateau sits high enough to feel a lot colder than Nuwara Eliya itself.

Gregory Lake
Gregory Lake sits right in Nuwara Eliya town, a colonial-era reservoir with a walking path along part of its shore, pedal boats and a small park that's popular with local families on weekends as much as with tourists. It's an easy, level way to spend an hour, especially in the late afternoon when the light softens over the water, and it works well paired with a wander through the town's older colonial buildings nearby.

Nuwara Eliya's climate and the April season
Nuwara Eliya's elevation keeps days mild year round. Nights get properly cold, and the coldest usually fall between December and February. Pack a warm layer for the evenings, even if you've spent the rest of your trip in shorts and sandals on the coast. The hill country's drier, clearer months run roughly December to March, with April mixed; outside that, expect more cloud and rain.
April is also the town's busiest time. Sri Lankans head up for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, and the programme includes horse racing at the racecourse, motor racing and a flower show. Rooms are hard to find and prices rise, so book well ahead if you're coming then.

Getting to Nuwara Eliya
The nearest railway station is Nanu Oya, about 6 to 8 km from Nuwara Eliya town and a 15 to 20 minute tuk-tuk or taxi ride away. As of 6 October 2026, trains run from Nanu Oya to Badulla through Ella (four trips a day since 20 June 2026), but nothing runs between Kandy or Peradeniya and Nanu Oya, and no reopening date is confirmed. Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is therefore a road journey: allow 3 to 4 hours to Nanu Oya by private van or car, then a short hop on to town. See our Kandy to Ella train guide for the current status before you plan around it.
Where to stay
Nuwara Eliya's guesthouses and small hotels cluster in two general areas: in and around the town centre, walkable to Gregory Lake and the shops, or a little further out toward the golf course and the older colonial buildings, which is quieter but means a short tuk-tuk ride for most things. Either works well for a one or two-night stay; book ahead around April, when Sri Lankans visit for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
How many days do you need in Nuwara Eliya?
One night is enough to see the town, walk around Gregory Lake and visit a tea estate on the way in or out. Add a second night if you want Horton Plains, since the early start there works better without also travelling that same day.
Nuwara Eliya isn't currently a stop on either of our Sri Lanka trips, both of which pass through Kandy and Ella on either side of it; independent travellers often add a night here between the two using a private transfer from Nanu Oya. For the route our trips do cover, see our Sri Lanka travel guide or compare departures on our Sri Lanka group trips page.
