Twenty-one days is the point where Sri Lanka stops being a checklist and starts being a proper trip: time for Anuradhapura alongside Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, both Nuwara Eliya and Ella in the hills, an overnight Adam's Peak climb if your dates allow it, a safari day, and close to a week spread across two stretches of the south coast. For the shorter lengths, see the Sri Lanka itinerary guide.

21DepartureRoad to Colombo (CMB) for your flight

This route covers the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and the south coast in full, without needing to time any leg outside its own dry season. Train status in early October 2026: Cyclone Ditwah damaged the hill-country line in November 2025. Nanu Oya to Badulla, through Ella, has run again since 20 June 2026, and Colombo to Peradeniya reopened on 2 October 2026. The sections between Peradeniya and Nanu Oya, including the stretch into Kandy, are still closed, so there's no rail link from Kandy to Nanu Oya. This route covers Kandy to Nanu Oya by road (roughly 3 to 4 hours, by private car or van, or by bus) and rides the Nanu Oya to Ella train for the scenic stretch. No reopening date for the closed sections is confirmed, so check our Kandy to Ella train guide and the Sri Lanka Railways site close to your dates. Our 12-Day Sri Lanka Tour runs close to the first 12 days of this route, minus Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya and Adam's Peak, if you'd rather have someone else book the train and the drivers for the part of the trip that fits a shorter departure.

Other ways to spend 3 weeks

Twenty-one days is long enough to consider a fourth region, but the two monsoons decide whether that's a straightforward add or a real trade-off. These three routes handle it differently.

The summer alternative (roughly May to September): for a trip timed in the east coast's own dry season, run the Cultural Triangle and hill country as in the recommended route, then close in the east instead of the south.

The complete circuit, five regions: the flagship version of this route, adding the east coast and the north on top of the recommended route's three regions. It only works by accepting a trade-off: either the south coast leg runs slightly outside its own best months, or the east coast and north legs run slightly outside theirs. April is the month where the two windows come closest: our best time guide describes it as mixed everywhere, with the south-west monsoon only starting to build toward the end of the month and the east coast's season starting around April or May.

The slower loop, no fourth region: the same three regions as the recommended route, with the extra days spent unpacking less often rather than covering more ground.

Choosing between them

ChooseIf
The recommended routeYour dates fall roughly January to March and you want no seasonal compromise
The summer alternativeYour dates fall roughly May to September
The complete circuit, five regionsYou want all five regions and can accept one coast being timed slightly off-season
The slower loopYou'd rather have more time in three regions than rush a fourth

What this costs

Budget roughly US$35 to $55 a day, flights extra. Our Sri Lanka cost guide counts that as a dorm bed or basic guesthouse, food, local transport and a share of entry fees, and it breaks the figure down by travel style. Entry fees are the biggest variable on this route. There's no combined Cultural Triangle ticket: each site sells its own, and Sigiriya is US$35 for a non-SAARC foreign adult (see our Sigiriya guide for the others). Horton Plains fees conflict between sources, so confirm them locally (see our Nuwara Eliya guide). Park entry for an Udawalawe safari is about US$42 to $45 with taxes, before the jeep. The Temple of the Tooth and Peradeniya's botanical gardens publish conflicting fees, so check our Kandy guide.

Best time and getting around

The south coast and hills are at their best roughly November to April, and the Cultural Triangle's heaviest rain falls October to December, so January to March is the cleanest window for all three together. From roughly May to September the east coast and the north take over. A private car or van covers every inland leg fastest. The hill-country train only runs from Nanu Oya onward toward Ella, not from Kandy (see the rail update above). Colombo to Galle is about 2 to 3 hours by road depending on traffic, and a fuel quota system has run since mid-March 2026, with tourists getting priority at fuel stations. See our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide for the month-by-month detail.
