A month in Sri Lanka is long enough to stop rushing and finally fit in the two regions most shorter trips skip: the east coast and the Tamil north. Two separate monsoons run the island on opposite schedules, though, so a single loop touching every region always makes one trade-off in timing, which this page states plainly further down rather than skipping over. For every other length, see the Sri Lanka itinerary guide.

This route needs no domestic flights at all, just road transport, one train back from Jaffna, and whatever's currently running of the hill-country line.

Train status in early October 2026: Cyclone Ditwah damaged the hill-country line in November 2025. Nanu Oya to Badulla, through Ella, has run again since 20 June 2026, and Colombo to Peradeniya reopened on 2 October 2026. The sections between Peradeniya and Nanu Oya, including the stretch into Kandy, are still closed, so there's no rail link from Kandy to Nanu Oya. That's why this route covers Kandy to Nanu Oya by road and rides the Nanu Oya to Ella train. No reopening date for the closed sections is confirmed, so check our Kandy to Ella train guide and the Sri Lanka Railways site close to your dates. Start it in March for the best overall balance: the Cultural Triangle, hill country and south coast all fall inside their own good months, and the east coast and Jaffna land in their shoulder season, past the north-east monsoon (roughly December to February) but not yet at their best. See the Cultural Triangle, hill country, east coast and south coast route guides for each stretch in full.

The west loop, unhurried

Stays inside the west and south's own dry season throughout, and uses the extra time on quieter extensions rather than a fourth region.

East coast and the north, in season

Drops the south coast for the months it's wrong anyway, and gives the east coast and Jaffna the time a shorter trip never can.

Choosing between them

RouteChoose it if
The full loop (recommended)You want to see every region, including the east coast and Jaffna, and are happy timing the trip around the shoulder-season trade-off
The west loop, unhurriedYou'd rather stay inside a single monsoon window than chase two, and want Adam's Peak and a slower pace instead of a fourth region
East coast and the north, in seasonYour trip falls roughly May to September, and surfing, snorkelling and a quieter, less-visited half of the island matter more than the south coast

What this costs

Budget US$35 to $55 a day, flights extra. Our Sri Lanka cost guide counts that as a dorm bed or basic guesthouse, food, local transport and a share of entry fees, and it breaks the figure down by travel style. A private car for the multi-stop road legs comes on top. There's no combined Cultural Triangle ticket: each site sells its own, and Sigiriya is US$35 for a non-SAARC foreign adult (see our Sigiriya guide and Polonnaruwa guide for the others, since published fees differ between sources). Safaris at Minneriya, Kaudulla, Kumana, Udawalawe and Yala are priced separately. At Yala and Udawalawe the base entry is US$25 and the all-in total for one adult is about US$42 to $45, with the jeep on top. The train legs are the Nanu Oya to Ella fare and the Yal Devi to and from Jaffna.

Best time to go

Start this loop in March for the best overall balance across all four regions. The Cultural Triangle, hill country and south coast are all in season (the south and hills are good roughly November to April, and the Cultural Triangle's heaviest rain falls October to December). The south-coast finish lands in late March, and the east coast and Jaffna come in after the north-east monsoon, roughly December to February, but before the east coast's own season. That's the trade-off of a single loop like this: the east coast leg won't be at its best, since that's roughly May to September, with July and August the peak. Running the east-coast-and-north alternative instead, timed for the middle of the year, avoids that trade-off but means giving up the south coast for the trip. See our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide for the month-by-month detail. Check Yala's block-closure status before you build a safari day around it: Blocks 1 and 2 are closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026.

Getting around

This route runs entirely on roads and rail, with no domestic flight needed: a private car or hired van for the Cultural Triangle, hill country and east-coast legs, the Nanu Oya to Ella train for the hill country's scenic stretch (see the rail update above), the Yal Devi train between Colombo and Jaffna, and either the coastal road or the coastal train between Colombo and Galle. A fuel quota system has run since mid-March 2026, with tourists getting priority at fuel stations. Our Sri Lanka travel guide covers trains, buses, tuk-tuks and drivers in full.
