Twenty-one days is long enough to link Java, Bali and the outer islands without a single day feeling rushed, and short enough that you're not forever waiting at ferry terminals. The route below, Yogyakarta's temples and two volcano mornings, then Bali, the Gilis, Lombok and a Komodo boat trip, is what our own trip runs, and it's the answer most people are actually looking for when they ask about three weeks in Indonesia. Two more focused alternatives follow it, for a genuine mountain trek instead of Java, or a slower Flores detour instead of the trek. For every other length, see the Bali itinerary guide.

Two legs do the heavy lifting: the ferry from Ijen across the Bali Strait, and the short flight from Lombok to Labuan Bajo, which turns what would otherwise be a multi-day boat and road slog into an afternoon. See the Java itinerary, the Gili Islands and Lombok itinerary and the Komodo guide for each stretch in more detail. Ijen's blue flames haven't been reliably visible in 2026, with reports of sulfur-pipe repairs and no reopening date, so plan that hike around the sunrise and the turquoise crater lake, and check before you go.

Bali, the Gilis and Lombok, with the Rinjani trek

Drops Java and Komodo for a proper mountain trek instead, at the cost of the dragons and the volcano mornings.

21DepartureFly home from Lombok-

See the Gili Islands and Lombok itinerary and the Mount Rinjani guide before you commit to the trek. A wildfire closed the Senaru trail from 22 September 2026 and it reopened on 3 October, and the dry season carries fire risk, so build the rest of this route so it still works if the mountain isn't open when you go.

Bali, Komodo and the Flores overland route

Keeps the boat trip and its dragons, and trades Java's volcanoes for a much quieter part of Indonesia that few tourists reach.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Flores on 15 August 2026, and landslides cut the Trans-Flores Highway. Reports from 18 to 21 August said Komodo National Park and its Padar and Komodo Island sites were operating again, Kelimutu reopened on 25 August with limits (counters open 07:00 to 12:00, some viewpoints closed), and Wae Rebo and Riung were reported closed in late August. Ask your operator before you rely on any overland stop; See the Flores itinerary and the Komodo guide for both halves in full.

The slow island loop: Bali, Nusa Penida and the Gilis, no flights

For anyone who'd rather not fly domestically at all: every stop connects by road or boat.

Choosing between them

RouteChoose it if
The full archipelago (recommended)You want one big first trip covering volcanoes, temples, islands and dragons, with a flight at each end
Bali, the Gilis and RinjaniA real mountain trek matters more to you than Java's volcanoes, and you're prepared to swap it out if it's not running
Bali, Komodo and Flores overlandWild dragons matter more to you than a trek, and you want to see a part of Indonesia few tourists reach
The slow island loopYou'd rather not fly within Indonesia at all, and prefer islands and beaches to a serious trek

What this costs

Outside your flights into Java and out of Labuan Bajo, plan on roughly IDR 280,000 to 450,000 a day (about US$16 to $25) for food, drinks and local transport across Bali, the Gilis and Lombok. On top of that, budget for beds, activities and boats, plus one-off costs: the domestic flights on the recommended route, about US$200 to $450 for a 3-day, 2-night Komodo boat trip, and, if you add the Rinjani alternative, about US$235 to $325 for the 3-day, 2-night summit trek. Our Bali cost guide and Lombok guide break down the day-to-day figures.

Best time to go

April to October suits every version on this page, with May, June and September the sweet spot for calmer seas between islands and fewer crowds. July and August can bring swell that delays Gili and Nusa Penida boats. Avoid stacking a long boat-heavy route into December through March: that's when Nusa Penida, Gili and Komodo crossings get roughest, and when Mount Rinjani closes for its routine wet-season shutdown regardless of any other disruption. Check whether your dates fall around Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, on Monday 8 March 2027: the whole island shuts down for 24 hours, with no flights and no boats.

Getting around

Overland vans and a ferry link Java to Bali; a car or private van covers Bali itself, since there's no railway. Fast boats carry you to Nusa Penida, the Gilis and, on the slow island loop, all the way to Lombok. The recommended route's Lombok-to-Labuan Bajo leg is a short flight rather than a multi-day boat and road run; the Flores alternative swaps that flight for overland travel on the Trans-Flores Highway instead.
