Thirty days changes what a Bali and Indonesia trip can be. Instead of choosing between Java's volcanoes and Lombok's, or between a boat trip and an overland leg, you can fit most of it in, provided you accept that a month still isn't quite enough for everything at once. The recommended route below is the 3-week Java-to-Komodo route, slowed down and filled out with a proper Rinjani trek. Two more month-long alternatives follow it: an easier Java-and-Bali pairing for anyone who'd rather go deep in two places than wide across five, and a Bali-and-Indonesia route for anyone who'd rather skip Java's early starts altogether. For every other length, see the Bali itinerary guide.

31Labuan BajoA buffer day, then fly homeFresh fish

The route runs to 31 days as written, with the last day built in as a genuine buffer since Komodo's boats sometimes can't sail in bad weather, not a fixed sightseeing day. Mount Rinjani's trek is the one leg here that's outside your control: check its current status before you commit, and see below for how to swap it out if the mountain isn't open when you go. See the Java itinerary, the Ubud and central Bali itinerary, the Gili Islands and Lombok itinerary and the Komodo guide for each stretch in full. Ijen's blue flames haven't been reliably visible in 2026, with reports of sulfur-pipe repairs and no reopening date, so plan that hike around the sunrise and the turquoise crater lake, and check before you go.

Bali and Indonesia without Java

Keeps the Rinjani trek and the Flores overland route, and drops Java's two pre-dawn volcano mornings entirely.

31EndeOnward flight or ferry connection-

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Flores on 15 August 2026, and landslides cut the Trans-Flores Highway. Reports from 18 to 21 August said Komodo National Park and its Padar and Komodo Island sites were operating again, Kelimutu reopened on 25 August with limits (counters open 07:00 to 12:00, some viewpoints closed), and Wae Rebo and Riung were reported closed in late August. Ask your operator before you rely on any overland stop; See the Gili Islands and Lombok itinerary, the Mount Rinjani guide and the Flores itinerary for each stretch, and check Rinjani's current status before you build a trip around the full summit trek. A wildfire closed the Senaru trail from 22 September 2026 and it reopened on 3 October, and the dry season carries fire risk.

Choosing between them

RouteChoose it if
The full archipelago, unhurried (recommended)You want to see everything on this page, including a real Rinjani trek, with rest days built in rather than hoped for
Java and Bali, at an easy paceYou'd rather go deep in two places than wide across five, and don't mind skipping the outer islands beyond Nusa Penida
Bali and Indonesia without JavaTwo pre-dawn volcano mornings don't appeal, and you'd rather use that week on a full Rinjani summit trek and the Flores overland route

What this costs

Outside your flights, plan on roughly IDR 280,000 to 450,000 a day (about US$16 to $25) for food, drinks and local transport across Bali, the Gilis and Lombok. On top of that, budget for beds, activities and boats, plus the recommended route's one-off costs: two or three domestic flights, about US$160 to $275 for the 2D1N Rinjani crater-rim trek, and about US$200 to $450 for the 3-day, 2-night Komodo boat trip. The Bali-and-Indonesia alternative swaps that trek price for the full 3D2N summit trek instead, at about US$235 to $325. Our Bali cost guide and Lombok guide break down the daily figures.

Best time to go

April to October suits every version here, with May, June and September the sweet spot for calmer seas and fewer crowds. July and August can bring swell that delays Gili and Nusa Penida boats. Avoid building a month-long route through December to March: that's when boat crossings to Nusa Penida, the Gilis and Komodo get roughest, and Mount Rinjani closes for its routine wet-season shutdown regardless of any other disruption. Check whether your dates fall around Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, on Monday 8 March 2027: the whole island shuts down for 24 hours, with no flights and no boats.

Getting around

Overland vans and a ferry link Java to Bali on the two routes that include it; a car or private van covers Bali itself, since there's no railway. Fast boats carry you to Nusa Penida and the Gilis, with a public boat on to Lombok. A short flight bridges Lombok to Labuan Bajo on the recommended and Java-and-Bali routes; the Bali-and-Indonesia alternative uses that same flight, then swaps to overland transport on the Trans-Flores Highway for its final week.
